Herbert Edwin Carlough, 100, of Brewster, passed away on May 17, 2016. A longtime resident of Weston, he spent his retirement in Brewster and Largo FL. He was born in White Plains New York February 1, 1916. Herbert was a baker and entrepreneur for almost 70 years. He was president and owner of Select Baking Company and after the sale of Select in 1960 he established his own food brokerage and consulting business which he ran until he was 83 years old. In addition he was president of New England Bakers Engineering Association and well know expert in the baking industry working the largest industrial bakeries in the United States. He was also a Freemason of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, Norumbega Fraternity Lodge and of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite obtaining the level of Master Mason. Herbert started a family tradition in 1960 of a weeklong family reunion which the family still continues for the Carlough Clan to honor the memory of his father, Milton and mother Flossi through the many generations for over the past 50 years to keep the family together. Herbert leaves his beloved wife Mary (Smaldone) Carlough of Brewster, his three children Corinne Lawrence of Fort Myers FL, Valerie (Carlough) Ewanouski of Waltham, and Daryl James Carlough of Hoboken NJ, also his step daughter Mimi Kelley and husband Joseph of Peabody and step son Michael Ruggerio and wife Darlene of Lynn. His loving grandchildren Scott and Kim Lawrence, Nicole, Danielle, and Blake Ewanouski and his great grandson Brent Lawrence. Hebert was the oldest last survivor of his siblings which included four brothers, Thornton, Robert, Howard (known by the family as Spencer his middle name) and Warren. He also had an older sister Grace. He will be dearly missed by all of nieces and nephews as well as great, and great great nieces and nephews who knew him as the "muffin man". His funeral will be held from the Eaton and Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Centre St., NEWTON CORNER, on Thursday, May 19th at 10AM, followed by a Graveside service at Newton Cemetery at 11AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers donations in Herbert's name may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston, 51 Blossom St. Boston, MA 02114.
