William G. McGagh, devoted husband, father and grandfather and former corporate finance executive, died peacefully in his sleep on November 20, 2017 at the age of 88. Resident of Westwood and Chatham, MA and formerly of Birmingham, MI and Los Angeles, CA, Bill was born on May 29, 1929 in Dorchester, MA to Irish-immigrant parents Thomas and Mary (McDonough) McGagh. Bill attended Boston College High School (Class of 1946), Boston College (B.S. Business Administration, '50), Harvard Business School (M.B.A., '52) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Sloan Fellow (M.S. Finance, '65). Following his time in the U.S. Air Force, Bill moved to Detroit, MI for a position with the Ford Motor Company, and in 1955 began a 25-year-long career with Chrysler Corporation, rising to Vice President and Treasurer. At Chrysler, he also served as Staff Executive–Finance for Latin American Operations and Chief Financial Officer of Chrysler Canada Ltd. In 1961, Bill married the love of his life Sarah (McQuigg) and they raised their two adored daughters, Margie and Sallie, in Birmingham, MI. In 1980, Bill joined Northrop Grumman Corporation in Century City, CA as Senior Vice President–Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Later he was also appointed to the Board of Directors of this defense and aerospace company.
In "semi retirement," Bill offered his financial acumen to many charitable organizations and was a Board member of the following: UCLA Medical Center–Santa Monica (past Chairman), John Tracy Clinic (past Chairman), Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, KCET Public Television of Southern California, Orthopaedic Institute for Children, Regents Council of Mount St. Mary's College, and Independent Colleges of Southern California. Bill was also a longtime supporter of ARCS Foundation – an organization dear to both his wife Sarah and his longtime companion Maggie Russell – which provides financial awards to exemplary students pursuing degrees in science, engineering and medical research.
Bill is survived by his daughter Sallie (McGagh) Delaney of Newton, MA, his son-in-law Randy Piotroski of Bell Canyon, CA, and six beloved grandchildren: Justin, Zak and Kira Piotroski and Sophia, Evan and Aidan Delaney. Bill was predeceased by his wife Sarah (McQuigg) McGagh, his daughter Margie (McGagh) Piotroski, longtime companion Maggie (McKnight) Russell, and his four siblings, Peggy, Thomas, John and Ginny McGagh. He is also survived by nephews Ken McGagh of Natick, MA and Jackson McQuigg of Atlanta, GA.
Visiting hours will be held at Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home at 465 Centre Street, Newton, MA on Friday, December 8, 2017 from 4:00-7:00pm. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 1321 Centre Street, Newton Centre, MA on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10:30 AM. Interment will take place at a later date at Union Cemetery, Chatham, MA, beside his beloved wife Sarah.
